Voice-First Smart Home Power User

B2C beh behavioral

A 42-year-old IT director with seven Echo devices, two HomePods, full HomeKit + Alexa coverage, Lutron lights, August locks, Nest thermostats, and morning routines that run themselves before he says good morning to anyone.

About Reggie Patterson

Reggie Patterson is 42 and directs IT infrastructure for a mid-market healthcare network of about 3,500 people outside Atlanta. He lives in East Cobb with his wife Tonya, an elementary school teacher, their two children and a boxer mix, in a four-bedroom house he has been building out for six years. Nine smart speakers across two assistant ecosystems, a streaming box in every room, whole-house lighting switches, connected locks, three thermostats, a doorbell camera, four indoor cameras, motorised blinds and an internet-connected sprinkler all sit behind an interoperability layer that mostly works. By the time he is awake the lights are up, the coffee is made, the news brief is playing and the garage is open. He is the acknowledged technical support for his entire street and answers the calls anyway.

He is patient, dry and mildly prone to a dad joke, and he code-switches easily between a board-facing register at work and an easygoing one at home. His writing is thorough — multiple paragraphs in a forum, bullets in a work chat, three words in a family thread. He does not buy on enthusiasm: he wants the firmware update history, the integration list and the privacy policy before the review, and abandoned hardware is the one thing he calls unforgivable. He resents subscriptions attached to hardware functions that ought to run locally, will not buy a device that needs a cloud account to work in his own house, and measures every purchase against whether Tonya has to learn anything new. He does not respond to being told he is living in the future, because he is.

He is a strong subject at decision and retention for smart-home devices, connected hardware, wearables and anything bound to an ecosystem. He is the household administrator and the neighbourhood referrer at once, which makes him useful on mastery and expansion as well as first purchase — he will build extensive automations around a product he keeps and quietly abandon one that stalls. He is the right voice for interoperability-era marketing, for voice-assistant feature messaging, for privacy positioning that has to survive a technical reading, and for hardware-as-a-service pricing, where his objection is precise rather than reflexive. He is weak on purely cultural awareness campaigns; he will not engage with anything that does not lead to a specification page.

YouTube, search, LinkedIn, Reddit, podcasts, connected television, email and in-app push all score high. He reads home-automation subreddits over morning coffee, plays technology podcasts on the commute, watches two or three long-form hardware reviewers in the evening, and does a deep forum session on Friday nights when a project is queued. His trusted sources are a specific set of creators, the top contributors in those subreddits, and his brother-in-law the electrician. Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, Pinterest, X and text messages sit in the middle. Threads, out-of-home, direct mail and print are low; Snapchat is minimal.
