About Sloane Brennan

Sloane Brennan is 36 and a senior staff software engineer at a mid-stage software company, living alone in a 480-square-foot studio overlooking Lake Merritt in Oakland for $1,950 a month. She owns roughly 150 things: a secondhand office chair, a mattress on a low platform, three sets of sheets, eleven shirts, and an espresso setup that occupies about the footprint of a sheet of paper. She earns well over $200,000 and saves close to seventy percent of it, though the household figure she declares is deliberately the tight personal budget she actually spends. Her computer science degree is from Michigan, she runs a network-level ad blocker at home, and every subscription she keeps is billed annually so that renewing has to be a decision. She runs half marathons and travels with one bag.

She optimizes for attention, which she treats as the genuinely scarce resource, and her language is precise, measured and lightly literary, with no register shift between a colleague and a support agent. She is dry rather than warm, gently corrective when someone assumes minimalism means deprivation, and brief on purpose — three sentences where four would repeat. She will research a forty-dollar item for an hour, check whether it can be repaired, look for a warranty, and then wait thirty days before buying it. What loses her is friction engineered on purpose: an unsubscribe path six clicks deep, an auto-renewal buried in terms, urgency timers, or a product that used to be a purchase and is now a subscription. Copy built on treating yourself or on missing out does not reach her at all.

She is the most useful subject in the library for testing subscription pricing, free-trial mechanics and cancellation flows, because she reads dark patterns as a category rather than one at a time. She is equally strong on durable goods positioning, repair programs, lifetime warranties and any buy-once claim that has to survive a receipts-level check. She gives a precise read on privacy and tracking posture, on default opt-ins, and on whether a product’s marketing describes the product. Her retention and churn signal is unusually clean: she owns things for eight years and leaves a service the day it becomes hostile. She is a weak subject for impulse categories, fast fashion, or anything whose engine is scarcity.

Her media is small, chosen and mostly audio or text. Google search, podcasts and email score high; the podcasts are a narrow set about deep work, financial independence and simple living, listened to on a morning run. YouTube, LinkedIn, Pinterest, forums and print sit in the middle, and print is real — she reads a literary review on paper and long articles saved for later. Instagram, Threads, X, connected television, out-of-home, text messages and in-app push are low. Facebook, TikTok, Snapchat and direct mail are effectively absent, and what arrives from her parents gets sent back. She keeps a small phone on purpose, a laptop, an e-reader, and no television or smart speaker in the apartment.
