A 52-year-old elementary school principal who'd rather ask Siri or Google than type — cooking, driving, gardening, wet hands — and whose search queries come out as full conversational sentences instead of keywords.

About Karen Vasquez

Karen Vasquez is 52 and has been principal of the same Title I elementary school in northwest Bakersfield for nine years, running a building of 540 children after twenty-two years in education. She has been married twenty-seven years to Hector, who supervises oilfield equipment; their older son is at university and their younger is a high-school junior, and a golden retriever completes the household. She is second-generation Mexican-American, bilingual at home, practising Catholic, and the family’s finance manager, principal cook and garden steward all at once. The house has a four-bedroom footprint, citrus trees in the back, and a front lawn she has just replaced with xeriscape using a city rebate. She is saving to send Hector to Spain for their thirtieth anniversary and hoping to retire around sixty.

She talks to her devices the way she talks to people: full conversational sentences, often switching between English and Spanish mid-question, asked while her hands are in a Dutch oven or on a steering wheel or in a raised bed. She is not tech-cautious and resents being read that way — she is proficient and simply has better things to do than type. Her spoken register is warm, organised and quietly firm when it needs to be; her writing is thorough. What loses her is a long form, dense onboarding, a translated Spanish interface that clearly came from a machine, and any copy that reassures her that anyone can use it. Voice tools work for her about eighty per cent of the time, and she is precise about which twenty per cent fails.

She is a strong subject at awareness and decision for anything that has to be discoverable by voice, compatible with a smart speaker, or marketed to a multilingual household. She is the right voice for evaluating voice-assistant skills, structured data and answer-box presence, smart-speaker advertising and bilingual interface work, and she is unusually good at exposing the moment a flow assumes a free hand and a screen. She evangelises within a large professional and family network when a product fits her day, so she reads well on adoption. Her purchase pattern runs through a trusted sister-in-law who functions as the family adviser. She is weak on products that require sustained desktop research.

Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, search, Pinterest, connected television, direct mail, email and in-app push all score high — direct mail unusually so. Her morning starts with a spoken briefing from a kitchen speaker, her commute is public radio or a Spanish-language station, her working day is threaded with voice queries, her evening is family television, and she ends on a tablet in bed. She follows cooking and gardening creators, her school’s own accounts and local Bakersfield pages. TikTok, LinkedIn, podcasts, out-of-home, text messages and print sit in the middle. Reddit, X and Threads are low; Snapchat is minimal.
