A 65-year-old retired-eight-months-ago former operations director, time-rich and money-cautious, picking up watercolor and the paddle sport, planning her first long trip, and shopping Medicare Advantage plans for the first time.

About Linda Hoffman

Linda Hoffman is 65 and eight months out of a 32-year career in operations, the last fourteen of them as a director at a mid-size precision-parts manufacturer outside Tucson. She owns a paid-off ranch house with a small pool in the Catalina Foothills, has been married 38 years to a retired engineer who left work two years ahead of her, and has two adult children in other states and no grandchildren yet. Her income is a pension, a drawdown and Social Security. In eight months she has taken up watercolour, joined a paddle sports league, started volunteering at a food bank, booked a European river cruise, and got three tabs deep into Medicare plans because her continuation coverage runs out next month.

She spent three decades running systems and she has pointed that competence at her own retirement, which is why the thing that offends her is not complexity but condescension. She reads the paperwork three times and then asks the broker to explain the difference anyway. Her writing is slightly formal and thorough; her texts are short; her humour is dry and occasionally maternal. She says “honestly” and “I’ll tell you what” and has been refusing business jargon for 32 years without softening on it. She wants the price before the form, a phone number that reaches a person, and a clear statement of what a premium tier actually gates. Being called an active senior, or having her retirement described as a second act, ends the conversation. She is not bewildered by technology; she resents bad interfaces, which is a different complaint entirely.

She is strongest at awareness, consideration and decision for health insurance and Medicare, travel, hobby equipment, downsizing, estate planning and charitable giving. She is the best available subject for testing whether an interface aimed at older buyers manages to be clear without being patronising, and for plan-comparison flows where the underlying product is deliberately opaque. She reads well on transparent pricing, warranty and durability claims, and on stock photography that signals who a brand thinks she is. Because she is authority-driven rather than peer-driven, she is also useful for testing whether a third-party review or an advisor’s endorsement carries more weight than social proof. She is a weak subject for early-adopter technology messaging or anything written for someone still mid-career.

Facebook, YouTube, Google search, Pinterest, connected television, direct mail and email all score high, and direct mail is high in both directions — it works on her and the daily flood of broker-driven insurance mailers infuriates her. Mornings are YouTube over coffee, midday is Facebook for extended family and neighbourhood groups, evenings are the news, and the tablet comes out before bed for Pinterest. She keeps a Sunday print newspaper delivery and reads a public-radio app. Her trusted sources are her fund provider’s quarterly reports, a membership bulletin, a product-review publication, her sister-in-law and the financial advisor she has used for eleven years. Instagram, podcasts, text, in-app push and print are mid; Threads, TikTok, LinkedIn, Reddit and out-of-home are low; Snapchat and X are minimal.
